The most destructive, widespread flooding to occur in the eastern United States occurred in June as a result of Hurricane Agnes.

Unlike some other flood producing hurricanes in the northeast, Agnes was not a particularly strong hurricane. In fact, most of its devastation occurred well after it had been downgraded to a tropical storm. "Hurricane Agnes originated in the Caribbean Sea region in mid-June. Circulation barely reached hurricane intensity for a brief period in the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm crossed the Florida Panhandle coastline on Jand followed an unusually extended overland trajectory combining with an extratropical system to bring very heavy rain. The Black Hills Flood ofalso known as the Rapid City Flood, was the most detrimental flood in South Dakota history, and one of the deadliest floods in U.S.
